I recently got the IP Ultra to use at my high altitude of 9,000 feet. I’m glad I paid a little more to get this model, but not because of its “high altitude adjustment” feature. The special feature added to this model allows you to set your altitude in a system setting. The ULTRA description for this feature is misleading: it suggests that it “takes the guesswork out of recipe conversion”. I would think that this means that if I enter the time listed in a recipe, it will do the math for me and actually change the time based on my altitude. (Some independent reviewers have also indicated that it will do this.) It does NOT do this. All this adjustment does is change the amount of time for the pre-programmed buttons, such as rice or porridge. That’s kind of nice, but not all that important for me since I usually follow recipes with their suggested timing.

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THE IP ULTRA AT HIGH ALTITUDE:
1. It will “remember” settings used previously. So, if I choose “Porridge” and set it for my own time, it will remember this the next time I use that program. So, even if I’m not happy with the factory pre-set time for my altitude, it will still remember my preference.
2. Because water boils at a lower temperature here (195.5 F at my altitude), some things will boil at factory pre-sets in the saute or slow-cook programs, when I would prefer a slow simmer. Or, in the saute mode I find that when it is too hot some things will burn before they finish cooking (such as onions). The ULTRA will allow me to choose my own temperature setting: low, medium, high or my own custom choice. It is usually better here to cook longer at a lower temperature, rather than too fast at high temps. This is particularly helpful at high altitude.

So, although the altitude adjustment feature on this model doesn’t do much, I’m glad to have the ULTRA.

Hi Nora,

thank you for your question 🙂

For slow cooking, you will want to use the High/more setting.

Please take care & have fun cooking

Most recipes are written for the duo. My current recipe for pulled pork says, “Press Slow Cook, leave the vent open, and cook on ‘More’ for 8 hours.” What I don’t know is what is the equivalent of “More” on the ultra? Should I cook it on low, medium, or high slow cook? Do you have a more detailed list of differences between duo settings and ultra settings for novice users like me? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hi Phyllis,

Hope you had a wonderful New Year & Christmas 🙂
Thank you for your question. The black button on the lid is the venting knob. On the ultra you don’t have to touch that button until you want to release the pressure.

Happy New Year & please take care

I bought this unit and only used it 2 handfuls of times . When pressure cooking is the button on the lid to far right suppose to be pushed down or stay up . Ironically my meals have turned out great but the directions do not say when you start pressure cooking is the button pushed in or should be out . I know when you lock the lid the silver button pushes in . Please let me know . Decided to get the top model and it has been a learning curve . Maybe should have started with the duo 60 first . My son got it for me for me a year ago and just started using it in the summer . I have read so many glowing reviews on this item . A great investment but need some clarity . Is there a video tutorial that walks you step by step on this model . Thankyou
